Wolves ‘should be embarrassed’ by ‘worst performance’ against Fulham

Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone says the team “should be embarrassed” after putting in what manager Vitor Pereira called their “worst performance” under his watch on Saturday.

The Midlands outfits were thoroughly beaten by Fulham at Craven Cottage to leave them languishing without a win at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Ryan Sessegnon opened the scoring early for the Cottagers and things began to go downhill from there for Wolves as Emmanuel Agbadou was sent off for taking down Josh King in the 36th minute.

Harry Wilson doubled the host’s lead on the hour mark before Yerson Mosquera completed a miserable afternoon with an own goal to make it 3-0.

“Maybe the worst performance from my team,” Pereira told BBC Match of the Day. “Maybe the worst technically, tactically, physically.

“We suffered. I never saw my team playing in the level we can play, the level we showed in the last game (against Chelsea).

“I don’t know if we didn’t recover. I changed players to find energy. 11v11 it was a mistake when we conceded the goal. After the red card, it was very difficult for us.

“Now, [I’m] trying to understand and we need to have a conversation to understand how it’s possible to play we did in the second half of the last game and then today.”

Asked if he was worried he would not get enough time to turn things around, Pereira responded: “I’m not worried about myself. I’m worried about my team. What we showed today, we need to talk about it. I cannot accept what we did today.”

Johnstone apologised to the Wolves supporters after the final whistle. “It’s just not good enough and we need to do better,” he told Premier League Productions.

“We should be embarrassed. They might not want to hear it but we apologise to the fans. We’re trying our best but we have to keep going. We’ve got good players and just need to turn it around quickly.”

The goalkeeper continued: “I think it’s difficult to find words. There’s a lot of emotions. It’s very difficult.”

Johnstone added that Wolves couldn’t catch a break on the day. “We go down to ten early, we concede early. It’s difficult in the Premier League to have a man down and try to get a result. I think pretty much everything went wrong.”
