West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has named Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as one of his ‘biggest role models’.
The 21-year-old has been named in the Portugal squad for the upcoming friendlies with Mexico and the United States. It’s reward for an impressive debut season at West Ham, with Fernandes a standout in a struggling side at the London Stadium.
Only Wolves’ Joao Gomes has won more tackles than Fernandes (54) in the Premier League this season.
Fernandes has linked up with compatriot and namesake Bruno Fernandes in the national team and has cited the Manchester United captain as role model.
Both players spent time developing at Sporting Lisbon before securing transfers to the Premier League.
“One of my biggest role models is Bruno Fernandes,” he told Sebastião Sousa-Pinto.
“Because of the player he is. It’s not something new; even back when I was at Sporting, he was someone I watched and tried to learn from.
“He plays in the same league as me, with a lot of experience in the national team and the Premier League. Without a doubt, Bruno stands out among the midfielders here [in the national team].”
