Thomas Frank apologised to the Spurs fan base after his side suffered an “extremely painful” defeat to north London rivals Arsenal on Sunday.Â
Their failure to sign Eberechi Eze came back to haunt them as the Gunners star netted a hat-trick after Leandro Trossard opened the scoring.
Richarlison scored a brilliant long range effort after catching David Raya off his line, but Tottenham were otherwise rudderless in attack and offered little in the way of fight.
Thomas Frank apologises to Spurs fans for Arsenal defeat
“It’s extremely painful,” Frank admitted to Sky Sports. “It was a bad performance and completely opposite of what the intention was before we came here. We can only apologise to the fans for this performance.
“No matter if the team went to play a bit short, they got on top of that and we couldn’t get out.
“They were stronger in the duels and we couldn’t get out of those duels. When it went long, with the duels and second balls, we didn’t win enough of those.
“On the day, a bad performance that we lost.”
Richarlison’s goal was Spurs’ first shot of the game and they went on to take just two more before the end of the game as they struggled to create chances.
“It’s something we’re working very hard on to improve that,” Frank insisted. “It didn’t look good today or in the Chelsea game. In other games, it has looked better.
“There were lots of things we needed to do better in this game.
“We played against our biggest rivals and lost badly, so of course there will be noise. It is what it is. We block out the noise, focus on the team.
“I know this team is very competitive, we showed it against Man City and PSG… today, it wasn’t good enough.”
