Thiago breaks Premier League record as Brentford climb to fifth

Igor Thiago continued his superb season at Brentford with two goals in the club’s 3-0 win over Sunderland.

An emphatic win for Keith Andrews’ side took Brentford up to fifth in the Premier League table, just a point outside the guaranteed Champions League places.

Thiago was on target twice in the win, with Yehor Yarmolyuk adding a third for the Bees. The former’s double followed a hat-trick at Everton at the weekend and extended his record to 16 goals in the Premier League so far this season.

The 24-year-old has now set a new record as the highest-scoring Brazilian in a single Premier League season.

He’s eclipsed the previous 15-goal record, held jointly by Roberto Firmino (Liverpool, 2017/18), Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal, 2022/23) and Matheus Cunha (Wolves, 2024/25).

Thiago trails only Erling Haaland for goals in the Premier League this season and has put himself in contention for an international call-up in March.

The forward has never been capped by Brazil at any level, but is now making his case as a late inclusion for the 2026 World Cup.

Only three players, Haaland, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe, have outscored Thiago across Europe’s top five leagues in 2025/26.
