The five best right-backs in the Premier League right now

Who is the best right-back in the Premier League right now? The Premier League is home to some of world football’s finest talents, with world-class talent spread right through the division.

Right-backs might not always gather the same level of attention as their peers, but it’s an ever-evolving and crucial role in the modern game.

We’ve attempted to rank the best right-backs in England’s top tier.

The best Premier League right-backs right now

5. Ben White – Arsenal

Arsenal’s defensive options are so good that Ben White has barely kicked a ball in the Premier League this season. Injuries have hindered that, but White is back available and ready to play a role in Arsenal’s challenge for the top prizes.

The 28-year-old offers all the attributes required of a modern full-back, with dynamism, front-footed defending, and superb passing over a variety of ranges.

He’s equally comfortable roaming forward as he is tucking in to play more centrally, with that adaptability an asset to Arsenal. Thomas Tuchel should really consider ending his England exile.

4. Pedro Porro – Tottenham Hotspur

When it comes to end product, few in the division can match Pedro Porro.

The Spaniard has recorded 25 goals and assists since signing for Spurs from Sporting Lisbon, a figure only Trent Alexander-Arnold (25) can match among Premier League full-backs.

Porro possesses a wicked delivery from open play and set-pieces, and the tenacity required to keep pace with elite wingers. If he can improve the win percentage of those defensive duels, he’ll boast all the tools.

3. Daniel Munoz – Crystal Palace

The Colombian road-runner has been one of the Premier League’s best bargain buys of recent windows. Crystal Palace picked up Munoz for just £6.6m from Genk in January 2024, where he’s since become a key cog in an improving side.

Munoz is the perfect wing-back for Oliver Glasner’s system, with his indefatigable energy and attacking threat. He’s provided 11 assists in 62 league games for the Eagles.

2. Reece James – Chelsea

Reece James is perhaps the most talented among this list, but injuries have prevented the Chelsea captain from reaching his best consistently. When in full flight, however, few can live with him.

The 25-year-old creates chances like a winger, defends with bullish strength, and has shown he can step into midfield for Enzo Maresca when required. He appears to have nailed down the right-back role for England, who have their fingers crossed that he can remain fit heading into next summer’s World Cup.

1. Jurrien Timber – Arsenal

When it comes to Premier League right-backs, Jurrien Timber is a cut above right now. The Dutch defender has shone in an Arsenal side who have become Europe’s best defensive unit under Mikel Arteta. Arsenal have conceded just once from open play in 14 games this season, with Timber a central part of that.

The 24-year-old can lock-down the best wingers in the league, boasting a mix of balance, strength, dynamism and distribution. Netherlands teammate Virgil van Dijk recently remarked that Timber is one of the best he’s played alongside.

“You are looking at someone who can play three, four positions at the very top level,” the Liverpool captain said.

“This is unique. I would love for him to be at Liverpool, of course. Jurrien is one of the best defenders I’ve played with.”
