Steven Gerrard reflects on ‘deserved’ Aston Villa sack

Steven Gerrard admits he deserved his dismissal at Aston Villa in October 2022 after the club’s poor start to the season.

Gerrard was sacked at Aston Villa after a difficult start to the 2022/23 season, in which just two wins in 12 games left The Villans above the relegation zone on goals scored.

Villa appointed Unai Emery as Gerrard’s replacement and have since gone from strength to strength, qualifying for the Champions League under Emery in 2023/24.

This season, Villa are third in the Premier League table and on a 10-match winning run across all competitions.

Speaking to Ally McCoist on ‘Ally’s Social Club’ for TNT Sports, Gerrard was asked where he felt his reign went wrong.

“We started the season really bad. We lost 2-0 to Bournemouth, we were poor. Tactically poor, the players never turned up. That was a shock result.

“We bounced back against Everton, won 1-0, we steadied it a little bit. But when we lost it, round the end of October, I didn’t feel I could pull it back.

“I felt a change in the dynamics, I’d upset too many in the dressing room too quickly, and I think that hurt me a lot. I think there was a core of players in the dressing room that pulled away from us as a staff.

“Interestingly enough, none of them players are in and around the 11 now.”
