Premier League Awards: Cherries stun Gunners, De Zerbi’s painful debut

Our Premier League Awards honour the best – and worst – of the weekend action. This edition features Mats Wieffer, Rio Ngumoha, and Bernardo Silva.

Moment of the Week

Arsenal face fresh scrutiny after a damaging 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth at the Emirates. The Gunners held a vital title-race advantage but faltered against the clinical Cherries. Mikel Arteta’s men lacked their usual spark throughout the contest. Consequently, the title race has swung back towards Manchester City.

Bournemouth showed remarkable resilience throughout the contest. Alex Scott delivered the knockout blow with a composed strike to stun the home crowd. They took their chances and defended with immense discipline. This result leaves Arsenal’s nerve in question once again as the pressure intensifies.

Player of the Week

Mats Wieffer produced a defining performance as Brighton dispatched Burnley 2-0. The Dutch midfielder scored twice, securing his first career double at Turf Moor. Crucially, his opening strike ended a 16-month goal drought. His last Premier League goal came against West Ham in December 2024.

He dominated the engine room with authority and physical presence. Moreover, his goals kept the Seagulls firmly in the hunt for European football. Brighton now sit ninth in the table following this professional display.

Goal of the Week

Rio Ngumoha announced himself to the Anfield faithful with a moment of magic. At just 17, he became Liverpool’s youngest-ever Premier League scorer at home. The teenager had already netted a winner at Newcastle in August. However, this sublime strike against Fulham was his first at Anfield.

The reigning champions needed a hero to snap a difficult run. Ngumoha delivered in spectacular fashion with a composed finish. He showed special quality to dominate his marker before scoring. He looks ready for the elite level.

Save of the Week

Robin Roefs was the hero for Sunderland during their narrow 1-0 win over Tottenham. He produced a spectacular fingertip save to deny Pedro Porro in the final seconds.

The Black Cats held on for a vital victory at the Stadium of Light. Roefs’ reflexes kept the three points safe. Consequently, Spurs remain in the relegation zone after another frustrating afternoon.

Stat of the Week

Bernardo Silva continues to rewrite the history books in a Manchester City shirt. He made his 297th appearance this weekend, setting a new record for a Portuguese player in the Premier League. He surpassed Luis Boa Morte’s long-standing tally of 296 matches.

A week to forget for…

Cristian Romero and Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian manager endured a nightmare debut in the Tottenham dugout. Spurs are in total crisis after a narrow defeat against Sunderland. They remain trapped in the relegation zone as the season reaches its climax.

However, the result was not the only devastating blow for the club. Key defender Cristian Romero suffered a serious injury during the match. He will now miss the remainder of the season. De Zerbi must find solutions fast to avoid a catastrophic drop.
