Phil Foden has said Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland can still score goals even when marked ‘out of the game’.
Haaland scored twice as Manchester City moved top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Everton at the Etihad. The home side were frustrated for large periods, with Haaland well marshalled inside the opening 45 minutes.
However, he broke the deadlock just before the hour after heading in Nico O’Reilly’s cross, before doubling his and City’s haul five minutes later. Haaland has now scored 23 goals in in just 13 games for club and country this season.
Foden underlined the importance of Haaland to City, with the Norwegian having scored 64.71% of the club’s Premier League goals.
“We know he’s got that quality to time his runs to perfection and be in the right position. If they mark him out of the game he is still capable of scoring and we know he only needs one chance to score,” Foden said to Premier League Productions.
“He remained very patient, there wasn’t a lot of space for him today. And as you can see he is always there for us at the right times, that is the sign of a world class striker.
“I think I am improving my relationship with Erling. I played a few good passes in behind for him today which he could have scored from. Unfortunately every time I pass to him he seems to miss. We are definitely building that relationship. I’m finding that ball in behind and getting the ball into areas where he can score goals. Something we have been working on.”
