Scott McTominay has defended the environment at Manchester United and believes it’s ‘too easy’ to suggest players improve after leaving Old Trafford.
McTominay is one of several players to have enjoyed an upturn since leaving the club, after leaving Manchester United for Napoli in 2024.
The 29-year-old was sold in a £25m deal, but has enjoyed the best period of his career since leaving his boyhood side. Last season, the Scotland international was named Serie A’s Most Valuable Player as Napoli won the Scudetto and was nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
Antony and Marcus Rashford are among the other players to have seemingly improved since leaving, but McTominay was quick to defend his former side. The midfielder insisted everything is set up for success in Manchester.
Speaking to CBS Sports, McTominay was asked about the ‘trend’ of players flourishing after leaving Manchester United but branded it a ‘myth’.

“I disagree. It’s too easy of an excuse. I think it’s too easy to say that,” he said.
“Whenever I was there they helped me with everything. Tactically, training, nutrition, everything is there for you to succeed.”
“It’s not like they don’t give you certain things that other clubs do, it’s a myth.
“Because the spotlight is directly on you, it makes it seem a lot worse. In my last year I did well, scored 10 goals and we won a trophy.”
