Maresca retains trust in current Chelsea goalkeepers

Enzo Maresca has insisted he has no concerns over Chelsea’s goalkeepers despite Robert Sanchez’s costly error at Manchester United.

Sanchez was sent off just five minutes into the 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, following a rash challenge on Bryan Mbeumo to deny a goalscoring opportunity. Last season, the Spaniard made five errors leading to goals in the Premier League, the joint-most of any goalkeeper.

Chelsea explored signing a new goalkeeper in the summer, with an approach made for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan. However, the Blues opted against a deal and instead put their trust in Sanchez and deputy Filip Jorgensen.

Despite Sanchez’s latest error, Maresca has said Chelsea are ‘happy’ with the options at their disposal.

“Robert [Sanchez] for a long period was very good for us. The last part of last season and the beginning of this season he was fantastic,” Maresca said ahead of this weekend’s clash with Brighton.

“He made a mistake against Manchester United and recognised that, I said many times that when a keeper makes a mistake or when a midfielder makes a mistake, it is exactly the same.

“We are happy with Robert, we are happy with Filip [Jorgensen] and there is not any problem with Robert.”
