Maresca explains poor Chelsea half following comeback at Newcastle

Enzo Maresca believes Newcastle United’s early goal on Saturday was the primary reason behind a slow start for Chelsea at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies dominated the first half after Nick Woltemade tapped in from close range just minutes after the game kicked off. The Germany international doubled the host’s lead in the 20th minute and could have scored another before the break but missed a gilt-edged chance in front of goal.

Chelsea recovered strongly in the second half as Reece James pegged Newcastle back with a fantastic goal from a direct free kick shortly after the restart.

Robert Sanchez launched the ball 60 yards to pick out Joao Pedro, who chested it down, worked his way past Malick Thiaw and drove into the box before slotting it beneath Aaron Ramsdale for the equaliser.

“After the first-half, they deserved to win the game, for sure, but after the second-half, we deserved to win the game,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference. “After the second goal was scored, we had three or four chances to win it.

“For sure, in the first-half, there are things we can do better, but the character and togetherness in the second-half. It’s not easy with this noise and environment. Not many teams can do that.”

Asked why Chelsea were so bad in the first half, Maresca replied: “The key for me was the goal we conceded. After three minutes, you concede a goal and the game goes in the direction they want. We scored twice in the second-half and could have scored more goals. We adjusted something at half-time. It’s not easy to come back in this stadium.

“I could see from the bench that the plan we prepared was the right one. My message at half-time was to continue doing what we’re doing.

The Italian added: “We won against Everton, achieved a semi-final and drew with Newcastle which is always an important result. I’m happy with the reaction from the players.”
