Manchester United travel to Anfield on Sunday with a daunting task.
They aim to achieve something manager Ruben Amorim has yet to manage: back-to-back Premier League victories. A solid 2-0 win over Sunderland before the international break did provide some respite. However, consistency remains a major issue for a side languishing in mid-table.
History is firmly against the Red Devils in this fixture. For instance, they are winless in their last nine league visits to Anfield. This poor run stretches all the way back to January 2016. Furthermore, their away form this season has been dismal. United have failed to win in their last eight league games on the road. Consequently, overcoming those statistics against Liverpool would represent a massive statement.
Manchester United team news
Manchester United will be without key defender Lisandro Martinez for Sunday’s trip to Liverpool. Manager Ruben Amorim confirmed that while Martinez is approaching a return from his knee injury, he is not yet back in full training. The defence faces further uncertainty as Noussair Mazraoui is also a major doubt, having not played for the club since September.
Despite these defensive concerns, Amorim has a strong squad to select from. Captain Bruno Fernandes is expected to be fresh after being granted extra time off following international duty. However, the manager will need to assess the condition of Casemiro and Matheus Cunha, who are returning from a long trip to the Far East with the Brazil national team.
