Manchester United are targeting Benfica left-back Samuel Dahl for the summer transfer window as the club look to bring in competition for Luke Shaw.
Shaw has been an ever-present in the Manchester United side this season, but concerns over his historical fitness record have made the signing of another left-back a priority for the summer. With the anticipated return of European football and a busier schedule, the Red Devils are eager to add defensive depth.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, United have watched Dahl ‘more than 10 times’ this season and have been impressed by Swede’s tactical adaptability and ‘physical robustness’. This season, Dahl ranks among the top 10% of full-backs in Europe for progressive passes completed and percentage of defensive duels won.
The 23-year-old has broken into the Benfica side on a regular basis this season with 46 appearances in all competitions. He has been capped twice for Sweden.
Benfica are in a strong position, with the defender contracted in Lisbon until 2029. The Portuguese side are also likely to demand a significant fee, due to a 40% sell-on clause owned by Dahl’s former club, AS Roma.
