Manchester United issue statement after ‘reluctantly’ deciding on Amorim exit

Manchester United have issued a statement following the decision to sack Ruben Amorim as head coach.

Amorim has left his position at Manchester United with immediate effect after 14 months in charge at Old Trafford. A growing unrest between the Portuguese coach and board has led to the decision, with the Red Devils currently sixth in the Premier League table.

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been placed in interim charge as the club begin the process of finding a replacement.

In a club statement, United thanked Amorim for his contributions and admitted the club ‘reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change’.

“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United,” the statement read.

“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
