Liverpool switch transfer targets as Newcastle reject Isak approach

Liverpool have reportedly received a swift rejection from Newcastle United over their approach for Alexander Isak in the summer transfer window.

The Reds did not submit a formal offer, but they “communicated their interest” in doing a deal worth £120 million, according to The Athletic.

There is an “awareness” at Anfield that the club need to bring in “further additions” ahead of next season, but it looks like Isak will not be one of them.

Liverpool have been told that the Sweden striker is not for sale and he is valued at £150m, according to Sky Sports News. Conversely, TNT Sports claim that the Merseyside outfit have not been in contact with anyone at Newcastle.

They are now “expected” to turn their attentions to Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, who is also a target for Newcastle.

The Magpies have recently been engaged in talks with the German side and the player’s representatives to try and organise a deal.

However, Newcastle have seen a club-record £70m bid for the 23-year-old rejected by Frankfurt. It’s claimed that other clubs have “signalled” they are willing to pay more than that figure for the starlet, whom they value at £85m.

Liverpool have already spent close to £200m on new signings this summer as Arne Slot strengthens his squad ahead of defending their Premier League title next season, including a potential British record transfer fee for Florian Wirtz.

They appear willing to spend even more before the window closes as their search for a new frontman continues. A number of options have been considered but, with Darwin Nunez potentially leaving, Ekitike could be the player to lead the line in 2025/26.

Ekitike scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga to help the German outfit qualify for the UEFA Champions League for just the second time in their history. He also registered 11 goal involvements in the Europa League and DFB-Pokal.
