Liverpool star Salah breaks CAF World Cup goal record

Mohamed Salah sealed Egypt’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after scoring twice in his nation’s 3-0 win over Djibouti.

Salah scored twice in a comfortable win for The Pharaohs to continue his brilliant record in World Cup qualification. The 33-year-old is the leading scorer in Africa’s (CAF) World Cup qualification phase with nine goals, while his double against Djibouti also set a new continental record.

Salah has scored 20 career goals in World Cup qualification, more than any other African footballer. His brace this week took Salah past another Premier League icon in Didier Drogba, who scored 18 times for the Ivory Coast.

All-time leading scorers in African World Cup qualifiers

  1. Mohamed Salah – Egypt (20)
  2. Didier Drogba – Ivory Coast (18)
  3. Islam Slimani – Algeria (18)
  4. Samuel Eto’o – Cameroon (17)
  5. Moumouni Dagano – Burkina Faso (12)
