Liverpool dealt potential blow in three-way Marc Guehi transfer battle

Liverpool may miss out on signing Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window as the Crystal Palace centre-back considers his future beyond Selhurst Park.

The England international has been linked with a big money move away this year following another impressive season, helping the Eagles win the FA Cup last month.

Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are all interested in doing a deal for the 24-year-old ahead of next season, but may have to bid their time.

Liverpool dealt potential blow in Marc Guehi transfer race

That’s because Guehi is in no rush to make a decision on his future and is “prepared” to run out the final year of his contract at Palace, according to The Guardian.

With the defender unwilling to sign a contract extension, Palace are said to want to “cash in” on their key defender rather than lose him on a free transfer next summer.

Guehi is “open minded” about his next club so long as it is the “right move” for his career at this moment. He wants to lock down a place in the England squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup, so regular gametime will be a “big consideration” in his decision.

Liverpool have emerged as the favourites to sign Guehi, but he would face competition for starts from the brilliant duo of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, who formed part of a steely defence on their way to the Premier League title in the 2024/25 term.

The champions are likely to put in a bid for Guehi once they sell Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. A £30 million deal is reportedly close to completion.

But Liverpool may have to look at other options if Guehi cannot be convinced to leave Palace in this window.

Newcastle made four bids for the centre-back last summer, the last of which would have seen them pay an initial £65m with £5m in add-ons, but were rejected by Palace. They also rejected a bid worth £70m from Spurs in the winter transfer window.
