Liverpool have opened up their defence of the Premier League in impressive fashion, securing five consecutive wins to lead the early table.
Arne Slot’s side beat Everton 2-1 in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday lunchtime, extending their perfect record to the 2025/26 season.
After Arsenal drew with Manchester City on Sunday, Liverpool now boast a five-point advantage over their nearest challengers. It’s the joint-biggest lead in the Premier League after only five games and just the third time a team has built a five-point advantage at this stage of the season.
Manchester City were the first team to do so after a brilliant start to the 2015/16 season. City raced out of the traps to win their opening five games, without conceding a goal.
However, Manuel Pellegrini’s team faltered after back-to-back losses to West Ham and Tottenham and eventually ended the campaign fourth.
Liverpool were the second side to do it, in 2019/20. That season, the Reds won their opening eight games and 26 of their first 27, drawing the other.
It remains the best ever start to a season in the history of the top five leagues in Europe, with Liverpool crowned champions with a record-breaking seven games to spare.
It’s only the third time in Premier League history a team has had a five-point lead after five matches!
