Hamburg team news

Hamburg faces suspension issues heading into this fixture, with midfielder Immanuel Pherai and midfielder Fábio Vieira both receiving red cards against Köln and will miss the match.

Borussia Dortmund team news

Dortmund do have injury concerns ahead of the trip to Hamburg. Niklas Süle is unavailable due to a toe injury, whilst midfielder Julian Brandt won’t be involved due to a muscle injury. Manager Niko Kovač confirmed the absences recently. “Niklas Süle will not be able to play due to a toe injury and will not play tomorrow,” he said.

Meanwhile, winger Julien Duranville has returned to fitness after recovering from shoulder surgery he underwent in the summer.

Form

Hamburg

Hamburg’s recent form tells a troubling story as Polzin’s side has struggled significantly to adapt to Bundesliga football since their promotion. Their opening four league matches showed some competitive spirit, but inconsistency has become their defining characteristic.

The club currently sits 13th in the Bundesliga with eight points from nine matches, having scored only seven goals whilst conceding 15.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund have established themselves as genuine Bundesliga title contenders this season. The Ruhr Valley club currently occupy third position with 20 points from nine games, trailing Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich by seven points. Under Kovač’s tactical direction, Dortmund have transformed into a more defensively robust side whilst maintaining their traditional attacking prowess.

They have conceded just six goals in the Bundesliga this season – their best record after nine games in 23 years – demonstrating the manager’s defensive improvements. After their recent victory over Augsburg, manager Kovač stated: “It was a tough match. We knew facing a side fighting against relegation would be difficult. You must be efficient and take your chances, and that worked for us today.”

Their only loss in the Bundesliga was against Bayern Munich (1-2), the only team with a better defensive record in the division.

Predicted lineups

Hamburg SV: Heuer Fernandes; Remberg, Elfadli, Vušković; Muheim, Lokonga, Meffert, Mikelbrencis; Philippe, Dompe; Königsdörffer.

Borussia Dortmund: Kobel; Anselmino, Anton, Bensebaini; Svensson, Nmecha, Bellingham; Adeyemi, Guirassy, Beier.
