Steven Gerrard believes Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins is capable of going to ‘another level’.
Gerrard worked alongside Watkins during his time as Aston Villa manager, with the former England captain impressed by the England forward.
Watkins has scored 90 goals in 247 games for The Villans, but has endured a slow start to the current campaign with just three Premier League goals before Christmas.
Despite that dip, Gerrard believes there is even more to come from Watkins. The ex-Villa boss was discussing his tenure with the club with Ally McCoist, on ‘Ally’s Social Club’ hosted by TNT Sports.
He said he had some ‘top’ players during his time at Villa Park and was disappointed by how his reign ended in October 2022.
“Some of the players we worked with at Villa were top. John McGinn, a manager’s dream, on and off the pitch.
“Matty Cash. Ollie Watkins. Top, top kids. We made some top signings, Lucas Digne, Boubacar Kamara. I think Watkins can be even better. I think he’s got another level, if he can find the consistency. Really disappointed and upset with how Villa finished, but totally deserved it with how the last run of results, for sure. That was on me.”
