Fantasy Premier League: The best FPL captains for Gameweek 10

We’re now well into the Fantasy Premier League season and FPL mini-leagues are starting to take shape.

Whether you’re out in front or part of the chasing pack, choosing the right captain is essential to earn maximum points. Ahead of the Gameweek 10 deadline, we’ve profiled some of the best options for the armband.

Fantasy Premier League: The best FPL captains for Gameweek 10

Erling Haaland vs Bournemouth (H)

FPL’s favourite perma-captain needs no introduction. Haaland has hit 11 goals in just nine league games this season, while last week’s blank at Aston Villa ended a run of 12 consecutive games with a goal in all competitions.

Haaland leads on almost every attacking metric, topping the Premier League for goals, non-penalty goals, and xG.

Going against him is always a brave move, though this week’s fixture is not overly appealing. Bournemouth sit second in the Premier League table, above City, and are unbeaten in eight.

Nick Woltemade vs West Ham (A)

Nick Woltemade failed to reward his backers in Gameweek Nine, having been the most brought in player. The giant German has made a superb start at Newcastle, scoring six times in 11 appearances, including a goal against Spurs in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Newcastle face West Ham this weekend, a side in crisis. The Hammers have lost all four home games this season and have conceded a league-leading 20 goals.

Nine of those have come from set-pieces, and the 6ft 6in Woltemade could profit from that vulnerability at the London Stadium.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta vs Brentford (H)

Nestled just behind Erling Haaland in the underlying data is Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Frenchman boasts the second-highest xG (7.9), non-penalty xG (6.3), and xG per 90 (0.91) of any player in the Premier League behind the Norwegian.

In a Crystal Palace side who have the highest xG creation (19.45) in the entire league, Mateta is often the man the chances fall to. He’s underperformed considerably (-2.9) when it comes to taking those chances, but a return of five goals in nine games remains a solid return.

He faces Brentford this weekend, with only three teams having conceded more Premier League goals than the Bees.

Danny Welbeck vs Leeds (H)

The promoted sides have been greatly improved from recent seasons, though they remain teams to target in FPL. Brighton host Leeds this weekend, with the Seagulls strongly fancied to take the points.

Danny Welbeck has been in fine form for Brighton, scoring five times in just nine games, including three in his last two. Fabian Hurzeler has been so impressed that he’s backed the 34-year-old for an England recall. Welbeck last played for the Three Lions in September 2018.
