Former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil forward Alexandre Pato is a part of a consortium interested in taking over Colchester United.
Pato was in attendance as Colchester beat Fleetwood Town 2-1 at the JobServe Community Stadium at the weekend, as talks continue over a potential takeover of the club.
Though no deal is imminent, the BBC are reporting that a takeover involving Pato and the consortium is possible. Pato called time on his football career last year, at the age of 36, and is now looking to enter ownership.
The Brazilian scored 63 goals in 150 games for AC Milan after joining the Italian side from Internacional and won the Serie A title with the club in 2010-11.
He later had spells with clubs including Corinthians, Sao Paulo, Villarreal, Tianjin Quanjian and Orlando City, alongside a brief injury-hit loan spell at Chelsea. Pato concluded his career with 188 goals in 500 club games, and 10 in 27 caps for Brazil at senior level.
His involvement in the consortium eager to take over Colchester is sure to increase interest in the League Two side, who are eighth in the fourth tier and battling for promotion.
Last month, Colchester owner Robbie Cowling discussed the ongoing takeover situation.
“We’ve got some interested parties. We’re not interested in people unless they’ve got the wealth to take the club on much further than myself,” he told BBC Essex.
“There is no timescale, the line has to be that I hand it on to the right person – it’s a bit like you looking for someone to adopt your child, you’ve got to vet them.”
