Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe believes his side were on the wrong end of “two tight decisions” as they drew with Everton at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the first half for his 17th goal in all competitions. Dan Burn thought he doubled the Magpies’ lead in the second half, but it was ruled offside following a VAR check.
Newcastle enjoyed the majority of chances, but were made to pay for their profligacy when Paul Dummett was penalised for dragging Ashley Young to the ground in the box. Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted form the spot for his first goal in 23 games.
“I thought the players were flat out and gave everything,” Howe told TNT Sports. “It was a decent performance but we needed a second goal. We were on the end of two tight decisions.
“It was players grappling each other. It was one of those that could have gone either way.
“Bar that penalty we go on to win that game. It would have been a tight win but a deserved one.”
Isak continued his excellent form of late, scoring his fifth goal in his four Premier League appearances.
“Alexander Isak is an outstanding technician,” Howe said. “He will probably rue the missed one but with attacking players you have to be in the position to score and he looks like he will score every game at the moment.”
Newcastle missed the opportunity to leapfrog West Ham in the Premier League table, while Everton are now four points above the relegation zone. The Tyneside outfit travel to Craven Cottage on Saturday to face Fulham.
