It’s been a hugely interesting midweek set of fixtures as the top Premier League sides entered the Carabao Cup, with the resulting draw for the fourth round throwing up some exciting ties.
West Ham and Tottenham were the big casualties of the round, with the Hammers being resoundingly booted out by League One side Oxford United, Pellegrini’s side on the wrong end of a 4-0 loss. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs were held to a 0-0 draw by Colchester United, with the League Two outfit going through 4-3 on penalties.
Elsewhere, Manchester United were also taken to penalties by lower league opposition, however, after a game in which goals were scored by 17-year-old Mason Greenwood and 16-year-old Luke Matheson, the Red Devils edged past League One Rochdale with a 5-3 shootout win.
There were some more comfortable passages for other Premier League sides though, Chelsea hammering Grimsby 7-1, Liverpool beating MK Dons 2-0 and Man City beating Preston 3-0 – to name but a few.
Following the conclusion of Wednesday’s fixtures, the draw for the next round took place, with a few tasty looking fixtures set to take place in late October.
0 – Reading's penalty shootout elimination away at Wolves means that there will be no second tier side playing in the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time in the competition's 59-year history. Leap.
