Can Newcastle end awful Etihad record and keep cup defence alive?

Newcastle United head to Manchester City this evening with history against the Magpies.

Overturning a two-goal deficit at the Etihad would be a monumental task for most sides, but Newcastle’s torrid record at tonight’s venue does little to inspire confidence.

It’s been over a decade since Newcastle last won at Manchester City, a 2-0 League Cup success in October 2014. That night, a teenage Rolando Aarons put the visitors ahead before Moussa Sissoko sealed progress for the Magpies in Manchester.

Much has changed since then; a relegation, promotion, transformative takeover, and two Champions League campaigns have all been involved in the Newcastle narrative since the club last celebrated success at the Etihad.

Even that win was a first in 12 attempts, and the sole success in 22 overall attempts since Manchester City moved to their current home in the summer of 2003.

Eddie Howe’s underdogs must also overcome their own away-day blues this season. Newcastle are 15th in the Premier League’s away table in 2025-26, having won just two of their 12 games on the road. Just three teams, Leeds, Burnley, and Wolves, have taken fewer points in away games.

City, in contrast, sit top for Premier League points won at home. Their 29 points from 12 games are matched only by leaders Arsenal, while only Spurs, in August, and Bayer Leverkusen, in November, have left the Etihad with a win in all competitions.

Newcastle’s success in last season’s Carabao Cup sparked an outpouring of emotion on Tyneside. Their win over Liverpool at Wembley was the club’s first domestic silverware in 70 years and first trophy of any kind since 1969. It had been a long, long wait.

Now, Newcastle need a performance to top even that night if the Magpies are to overcome the odds and book a date with Arsenal next month.

It seems an almighty task, but records – even wretched ones – are there to be broken.
