Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has backed Danny Welbeck to earn a shock England recall.
The veteran forward has started the season in terrific form, scoring five goals in nine Premier League appearances. Welbeck followed up a match-winning brace against Newcastle with a fantastic free-kick at former club Manchester United last weekend.
The 34-year-old is the highest-scoring Englishman in the Premier League this season and Hurzeler believes international recognition should not be ruled out.
It’s been over seven years since Welbeck last represented England, though Hurzeler says both he and the Brighton squad think the forward should be an option for Thomas Tuchel. Welbeck boasts a fine record at international level, scoring 16 times in 42 appearances for the Three Lions.
Hurzeler: Brighton striker Welbeck can play for England
“I just asked the question to the squad whether Danny Welbeck can play for England and they all agreed [he can]. That was the only time we’ve mentioned it. Let’s see what happens.
Five years as a Seagull 🤩🤍💙
Thank you for your support over the last five years, it’s been some ride 🙌🏿#BHAFC pic.twitter.com/qGrtLxgZXf— Danny Welbeck (@DannyWelbeck) October 19, 2025
“I’m very convinced for my players and I have a big belief that Danny will be able to play for England but I always try to emphasise that England has a great coach and he will make the right decisions. Let’s see.”
