Mikel Arteta has revealed that Arsenal defender Gabriel Maghalaes is a doubt to face Crystal Palace this weekend.
Gabriel picked up a knock during the 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in midweek and is yet to train with the Gunners.
The Brazil international had scored the opener in the Champions League win over the Spanish side and has been a key part of a strong start to the season.
Arsenal have conceded just once from open play in 12 games, with the centre-back a crucial part of that record. However, Arteta confirmed at his pre-match press conference that Gabriel is doubtful.
“Big Gabby had to leave the pitch against Atletico Madrid with an issue and we will have to wait over the next 24 hours to see if he is available.”
Gabriel’s goal in midweek continued Arsenal’s excellent record from set pieces. The North Londoners have scored eight Premier League goals from set pieces this season and just five from open play. However, Arteta said he is not concerned that his team are reliant on dead-ball situations.
“I don’t see football like open play and set pieces. I see the game in a different way.
“We have given that part of the game the importance it deserves. We have to maximise things we have and be effective.
“Ten years ago I had a vision and tried to implement a method and I am surrounded by the best people to deliver that.”
