Arsenal star close to return as Arteta issues injury update

Arsenal playmaker Kai Havertz is nearing a return to action as Mikel Arteta provided an injury update on his squad ahead of facing Liverpool.

The Gunners host the Reds at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday as they look to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The north London outfit have welcome back a number of key players from injury in recent weeks, including Gabriel Jesus, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, but they still have three men on the treatment table.

Defenders Riccardo Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera have been ruled out of the Liverpool game, while teenager Max Dowman is not expected to return from an ankle problem until next month.

“[Calafiori and Mosquera] are out again,” Arteta confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

“I think pretty soon [they will return]. They have to go through the last stage of the rehab, and if everything goes well, hopefully soon they will be available for selection.”

Arsenal star Havertz close to return as Arteta issues injury update

Havertz trained on Wednesday as he steps up his recovery from a knee injury he sustained on the opening day of the season against Manchester United. Arteta says they are carefully managing the Germany international, but revealed he is “very close” to being available for selection again.

“We are monitoring his load,” he said. “He’s been out for a long time for two different reasons.

“He’s very close. He trained this morning again. Hopefully we’re going to have him available and the best version of himself.”
