Arsenal close in on Champions League record held by Chelsea

Arsenal are closing in on the record for the most clean sheets in a Champions League campaign, currently held by London rivals Chelsea.

David Raya recorded his seventh shut-out of the Champions League season on Tuesday night, as Arsenal won 1-0 at Sporting CP in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

The Spaniard’s string of saves saw him labelled extraordinary by Mikel Arteta at full-time, with Raya forced to work hard for his latest clean sheet.

Arsenal are now closing in on the Champions League record. Chelsea hold the current record, having recorded nine clean sheets during their victorious 2020-21 season.

Edouard Mendy conceded only four goals across the entire European campaign, which concluded with another shut-out as Manchester City were beaten 1-0 in the final.

The Senegal international was recognised with the UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season and The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper awards following that triumph.

Arsenal have the advantage of an additional two games, should the Gunners reach the final. The expanded 36-team competition means teams now play eight group-stage games, an increase on the six that Chelsea played in 2020-21.
