Antoine Griezmann looks set for a move to Major League Soccer this year, but Atletico Madrid will reportedly make him wait until the summer transfer window.Â
Orlando City are in “advanced discussions” with the Spanish outfit over a deal for the forward for their open designated player spot, according to The Athletic.
Currently, there are “no agreements” in place, and Orlando are also “also engaged with other targets”. The report adds that the club’s sporting director and general manager, Ricardo Moreira, has “been to Spain multiple times to work on the deal”, although “formal talks” have not taken place.
MLS has in recent years become a popular destination for former LaLiga stars, with Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suarez currently plying their trade at Inter Miami.
‘Dream’ Antoine Griezmann move potentially on hold amid transfer talks
Griezmann looks destined to follow suit in Florida, with AS claiming that it is a “long-term dream” to eventually play in the United States of America.
However, Madrid have “no intention” of letting the 34-year-old leave the Metropolitano before the end of the season.
The forward’s relationship with the club and manager Diego Simeone remains “excellent”, but the plan is to “sit down calmly at the end of the season and discuss what comes next”.
Atleti are still fighting on three fronts and are on the verge of reaching the Copa del Rey final. They do not wish to weaken their squad just as they reach a pivotal part of the 2025/26 campaign.
The MLS transfer window is open until 26th March and opens again on 13th July.
