Amorim wants Man United to embrace Liverpool pressure

Ruben Amorim wants his Manchester United side to embrace an expectation to win games.

Manchester United make the trip to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, as English football’s most successful sides meet at Anfield.

Liverpool levelled Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles last season and will start as favourites despite recent poor form. United have now gone 12 years without winning the Premier League, while it’s been a decade since the club’s last win at Anfield.

Amorim, however, insists his side can compete and wants the Red Devils to reacquaint themselves with the expectation to win big games.

“I remember [in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool last season] we played really well but it was a draw. I was really upset at the end of the game,” Amorim said at his pre-match press conference.

“We prove at the end we can compete against any opponent. I know it is special for our club. I know they are competing for a number of titles. It is one more game we need to prove again that we are playing better. We need to be better in both boxes. It’s one more game that we need to win.”

On how his squad feel entering the game as underdogs, Amorim added: “Maybe the expectations, when you have to win and the responsibility of winning it is so much harder.

“When you play in big clubs, you need to win every game. We have difficulties some times to play with that responsibility. Maybe when Manchester United are not expected to win, it is easier for the players to perform but we need to change that.”
