Ruben Amorim has called for more power at Manchester United, insisting he came to be the ‘manager’ of the club and not ‘head coach’.
Amorim has endured a challenging time since arriving at Old Trafford in November 2024, with the club ending last season 15th in the Premier League, alongside losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
This season, United sit fifth in the Premier League table but have remained inconsistent in their performances. Amorim’s side drew 1-1 with Leeds in the Premier League on Sunday, a result which followed a draw with 20th-placed Wolves in midweek.
Speculation continues to surround the 40-year-old’s future, amid ongoing scrutiny of his tactics and external frustration with a refusal to adapt his system.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Amorim suggested he needs more overall control before hastily leaving the assembled media.
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach. I know my name is not Conte, Tuchel, Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United,” he said.
“It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change. I’m not going to quit. I’ll do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”
