Trent Alexander-Arnold has said a hostile reception from the Liverpool crowd will not change his love towards the club.
Alexander-Arnold will face Liverpool for the first time since leaving in the summer, when Real Madrid travel to Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The right-back was criticised for the manner of his exit, after running his contract down and leaving for Spain at a reduced fee.
The 27-year-old endured boos from the Liverpool supporters during his final games with the Reds, though was received well during his final appearance as Liverpool celebrated 2024/25 title success in May.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, Alexander-Arnold admitted he was unsure how he’d be received on Merseyside but said no reception can change his feelings towards the club. The defender came through the academy ranks and made 354 appearances for Liverpool.
“No matter what, my feelings won’t change towards Liverpool,” Alexander-Arnold said when asked about the reception he may receive.
“I have got memories there that will last me a lifetime and no matter how I am received, that won’t change.
“I will always love the club. I will always be a fan of the club. I will always be thankful for the opportunities [Liverpool gave me]. Everything that we achieved together will live with me forever.”
The England international admitted he spoke to some of his former teammates after the draw, and insisted he’ll need to put emotions to one side.
“When the [Champions League] draw was made, everyone knew it was going to happen. It was destined for that fixture to come out,” he said.
“Obviously they’re a top team so I knew at some stage, at some point, I would end up playing against Liverpool, but it’s happening so soon.
“There were a few messages after the draw from Robbo [Andy Robertson], Mo [Mohamed Salah]. Everyone was just laughing because everyone knew it was going to happen.
“So, yeah, I’ve got mixed emotions. It will be a very difficult game but one I’m excited for. Huge game, huge stage to go and try and perform.”
