Iran will take on Belgium at Los Angeles Stadium in a Group G Round 2 clash on Sunday, with both sides coming into the match after drawing their opening games.
Iran come into this contest showing determination but also some frustration after missed opportunities in their opening match.
They twice fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand, demonstrating their attacking threat and resilience.
Amir Ghalenoei’s side had built solid form before the tournament, recording wins in friendly matches against Gambia and Mali, and they continue to look dangerous going forward.
Iran team news
There are, however, several injury concerns within the squad. Midfielders Saman Ghoddos and Roozbeh Cheshmi are both facing late fitness tests.
Ghoddos is dealing with an ankle issue, while Cheshmi is struggling with a hamstring problem, leaving their availability uncertain.
Captain Alireza Jahanbakhsh is also a major doubt after missing the opening game due to a muscular injury, adding further uncertainty to Iran’s lineup.
Off the pitch, Iran have faced significant logistical challenges. Due to strict travel restrictions in the United States, the team has been based in Tijuana, Mexico, and will only arrive in Los Angeles 24 hours before kickoff, which could impact their preparation.
Despite these setbacks, Iran still possess strong attacking options. Mehdi Taremi and Shahriyar Moghanlou are both fit and expected to lead the line.
In goal, experienced keeper Alireza Beiranvand will start and aim to provide stability at the back against Belgium’s attack.
