Premier League guaranteed fifth Champions League place

The Premier League is guaranteed to have at least five teams in next season’s Champions League.

Arsenal’s win at Sporting CP in the Champions League on Tuesday night ensured England can not be caught in the co-efficient rankings.

England currently has the highest co-efficient in Europe and Arsenal’s win has cemented an additional Champions League place for next season, which will be awarded to the fifth-place side in this season’s Premier League.

UEFA allocates two places to the top two performing nations at the end of each season. The Premier League is now guaranteed to fill one of those slots, with five clubs remaining in UEFA competitions. Arsenal, Liverpool (UCL), Aston Villa, Forest (UEL) and Crystal Palace (UECL) are all into quarter-finals.

Spain sits second at present in the co-efficient rankings, ahead of Germany and Portugal.

There is still a chance that a record-breaking seven English teams could compete in next season’s Champions League.

That could occur if Liverpool win the Champions League and finish outside the top five, and either Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest win the Europa League.
