Henderson backs Ben White’s England recall after boos

Jordan Henderson has backed Ben White’s recall to the England squad after the Arsenal defender was booed against Uruguay.

White was called up by Thomas Tuchel this month in a recall that ended a three-year absence from the national team.

The 28-year-old had not been involved after making himself unavailable for selection, having left the 2022 World Cup squad under former manager Gareth Southgate.

In an eventful return for the Three Lions, White scored and conceded a penalty in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay. In the background, he was met by boos from some sections of the England support.

Henderson has defended White and said his decision to leave the World Cup camp in 2022 is something that has been dealt with ‘internally’. The Brentford midfielder also suggested some of the reporting around White’s self-imposed absence ‘isn’t true’.

“England fans booing Ben White? Some of the fans probably don’t even know why they are booing. They listen to what is being said in the media, and a lot of the time what the media says isn’t true,” Henderson said to the BBC.

“Not many people know the ins and outs of what happened in Qatar and it is for us to deal with internally. Ben has been good since he came back in and we will support him as team-mates.”
