Liverpool still ‘have a lot to play for’ as set pieces down West Ham

Cody Gakpo believes Liverpool can still have a successful season after helping the team to victory over West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.

The Netherlands international scored the Reds’ fourth goal of a 5-2 win at Anfield to move the club into the top five in the Premier League table.

After struggling with set pieces on both sides of the ball for much of the season, the Merseyside outfit scored three goals from corners in a clinical first-half performance.

With the league title out of reach, Gakpo hopes their newfound proficiency from dead ball situations can help them succeed in the UEFA Champions League or FA Cup.

“It was a good afternoon,” the forward told Sky Sports. “Step by step, we’re getting a better team. We had a difficult moment during the season, but hopefully these last few games are the start of something beautiful.

“We worked very hard, even in the first half. We scored from two set pieces or maybe three. The score was 5-2 but the game was much closer than the end result. They are a good side.

“We’re coming to the end of the season and we’re still in the Champions League and FA Cup. There is a lot to play for. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum we have and end the season in a good way.

“When the game is stuck and you know you can score from a set piece, we lacked that earlier in the season. It’s good.”

Liverpool have been drawn against Galatasaray in the last-16 of the Champions League. Gakpo is relishing the rematch following their 1-0 defeat in Istanbul in September.

He said: “We are up for a fight. We’ve been there already this season and we know what we’re up against.”
