Carragher predicts Liverpool will miss out on UCL football

Jamie Carragher has said it will take a huge upturn for Liverpool to secure Champions League qualification.

Arne Slot’s side lost 2-1 to Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday to leave them adrift in the race for Europe. The Reds are sixth in the table and four points adrift of fifth-placed Chelsea, with fifth likely to be allocated a Champions League berth for next season.

It’s been a stark decline for Liverpool, who won the Premier League title under Slot last season. Despite a record-breaking summer spend, the champions have endured a significant downturn from last season’s performances.

Reflecting on their latest setback, Carragher was asked whether he feels his former side will secure a place in the Champions League.

“No. Right now I don’t,” he said to Sky Sports.

“They would have to have a huge upturn in form. And the ones above them are in great form.

“It’s a bad one. When you look at the league for Liverpool, it looks like a long way to get into the top five Champions League positions. There’s a gap now. You can make that up but Liverpool will have to do well in the two cup competitions to save the season.”
