Arne Slot said he wants to highlight the ‘outstanding’ performance of Joe Gomez in Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Marseille.
Liverpool took a big step towards the Champions League’s last 16 with a 3-0 win at The Stade Velodrome, as goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, a Geronimo Rulli own goal, and Cody Gakpo’s late effort sealed success in France.
The win moved the Reds up to fourth in the UCL table and within reach of an automatic place in the last 16.
Slot was pleased to see his side bounce back from a frustrating run of league draws, while extending their unbeaten run to 13 games in all competitions.
The Dutchman had particular praise for Joe Gomez, as the centre-back shone on a rare start. Gomez has started just seven times in all competitions this season but excelled in the absence of Ibrahima Konate .
“The one I want to take out [and highlight] is Joe Gomez because he hasn’t played a lot in the last one-and-a-half years,” Slot said.
“He suffered sometimes from injuries, sometimes I didn’t play him when he was fit. A few times when he played were moments in [the] League Cup and FA Cup.
“Tonight he had an outstanding performance with an important role in our 3-0.”
