Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim as head coach

Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim as head coach, following a ‘breakdown’ in his relationship with the board.

Amorim has endured a challenging 14 months in charge at Manchester United since replacing Erik ten Hag in November 2024. The Red Devils ended the 2024/25 campaign 15th in the Premier League, the club’s lowest league finish since relegation in 1974.

Though there has been improvement this season, with Amorim’s side sixth in the table, fractures have become evident between the 40-year-old at club’s board.

Following the draw with Leeds United on Sunday, Amorim suggested he wanted more power, insisting he came to be Manchester United ‘manager’ and not ‘head coach’.

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach,” he said.

“I know my name is not Conte, Tuchel, Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United,” he said.

“It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change. I’m not going to quit. I’ll do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”

The Athletic are reporting that a decision has been made to sack the former Sporting Lisbon coach with immediate effect. Ex-Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge on an interim basis.

Fletcher will lead the side against Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday. An official club statement is expected to follow.
