Amorim ‘really pleased’ by Manchester United progress following Wolves win

Ruben Amorim says he is “really pleased” by how much the Manchester United attack has improved after they put four goals past Wolves on Monday night.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde cancelled out Bruno Fernandes’ opener on the stroke of halftime, but the Red Devils hit back after the interval.

Bryan Mbeumo put them back in front in the 51st minute before Mason Mount got his third goal of the season on the hour mark. Fernandes wrapped up proceedings at Molineux with a late penalty.

Asked if United needed a response after relinquishing their lead in the first half, Amorim told Sky Sports: “That was clear. The players felt that. We had control, but we need to understand in our moment anything can happen.

“It doesn’t matter the score, we need to push forward and we did that second half. I really enjoyed the way we played second half.”

United are knocking on the door for the UEFA Champions League places as they sit sixth in the Premier League table, one point behind Crystal Palace in fourth.

Only two teams have scored more league goals this season than Amorim’s side, who have found the net 26 times. It’s a marked improvement from last term when only four teams scored fewer goals than their 44. They are now scoring at a rate of 1.6 goals per game whereas last year it was 1.11, while their non-penalty expected goals have improved from 1.3 to 1.58, according to FBref.

“We scored four but had a lot of shots,” Amorim said. “I cannot make that connection with being more clinical. We improved a lot.

“If you compare last season and this season, we are creating so much more chances and scoring more goals and having more real situations of danger. I am really pleased with that.”
