Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo – Match preview and team news

Real Madrid and Celta Vigo lock horns at the Bernabéu on Sunday evening in LaLiga, with the hosts seeking to maintain their title push.

Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo – Match preview and team news

  • Date: Sunday, 7th December.
  • Kick-off: 8pm BST.
  • Venue: Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid.

Real Madrid team news

Los Blancos are facing a significant injury crisis on the right flank, with both senior full-backs sidelined. England international Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered a muscle injury during the Athletic Club victory on 3 December and is expected to miss up to 13 matches. That could include Champions League fixtures against Manchester City, AS Monaco, and Benfica. He is targeting a return in February.

Dani Carvajal also remains unavailable after undergoing knee surgery in October. The veteran is eyeing a comeback during January’s Spanish Super Cup. French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is also a major doubt after sustaining an ankle injury in the same match against Athletic Club.

With these absences, manager Xabi Alonso is likely to deploy centre-back Raúl Asencio at right-back, while Federico Valverde is expected to shift from the right flank to midfield. Additionally, defenders David Alaba and Ferland Mendy remain unavailable

Celta Vigo team news

Claudio Giráldez’s side recently advanced past Sant Andreu in the Copa del Rey on penalties last Thursday and will be boosted by the return of key players from rest.

However, defender Joseph Aidoo is a major doubt after lasting just 11 minutes of the midweek Copa del Rey clash before picking up an undisclosed injury.

Midfielder Mihailo Ristić is also sweating on fitness ahead of this fixture. Celta’s primary attacking threat comes from top scorer Borja Iglesias, who has netted five goals in 14 LaLiga matches this season

Form

Real Madrid

Xabi Alonso’s side experienced a difficult run of results before the Athletic Club victory, drawing with Rayo Vallecano, Elche, and Girona to drop six points and see Barcelona move top of the La Liga standings.

However, the 3-0 victory away at Athletic Club on 3 December has provided momentum heading into this contest. Importantly, Real Madrid have won all eight home matches this season (six in LaLiga and two in the Champions League), establishing a fortress at the Bernabéu.

Celta Vigo

Claudio Giráldez’s men have struggled for consistency, claiming just one victory in their last five matches across all competitions.

Currently sitting 12th in LaLiga with 16 points—level with the two teams directly above them—Celta are fighting to establish themselves in mid-table. A positive note is their away record in the league, where they have lost only one of six matches and won the last three

Predicted lineups

Real Madrid: Courtois; Asencio, Militao, Rudiger, Carreras; Guler, Valverde, Tchouameni; Bellingham; Vinicius, Mbappe.

Celta Vigo: Radu; Alonso, Starfelt, J Rodriguez; Rueda, D Rodriguez, Moriba, Carreira; Zaragoza, Iglesias, Aspas.
