Tuchel keen to build England side without ego

Thomas Tuchel has said he wants to build an England team without ego as the Three Lions head to the World Cup next summer.

England continued their perfect qualification campaign with a 2-0 win over Serbia on Thursday night. Goals from Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze sealed success at Wembley, with England yet to concede a goal in qualification.

Tuchel’s side are already confirmed as World Cup participants, with the focus now on fine-tuning the side.

The German made headlines this week when he suggested big names may be left out of his starting side, insisting high-profile stars will not be shoehorned into a team.

Against Serbia, he named the returning Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden on the bench, as Morgan Rogers kept his place as England’s attacking midfielder.

Foden combined with fellow substitute Eze for the second goal and Tuchel said success will come as a result of more than the first XI, insisting he wants England to ‘put ego behind them’ and work as a squad in pursuit of World Cup glory.

“We had good impact from bench straight away. We brought on quality players and they wanted to show what they could do. They created chances, half chances and scored in the end. You could see the impact and it has to stay like this.

“It is not about building starting eleven. It is about building a team and they buy into it. Put ego behind them because it is the right thing to do for the team.”
