Newcastle United travel to West London on Sunday with their confidence restored.
Indeed, a superb 2-0 Champions League victory over Athletic Club in midweek provided the perfect response. This came after a disappointing 3-1 league defeat at West Ham. Now, Eddie Howe’s side must focus on fixing their domestic away form.
The Magpies have struggled significantly on the road this season. In fact, they are winless in their last eight Premier League away matches, a run stretching back to last April. This is a statistic they are determined to put right. However, they face a Brentford side that have already beaten Manchester United at home this season.
Newcastle United team news
Eddie Howe is facing a fresh and significant injury headache. Specifically, he is sweating on the fitness of Anthony Gordon for the trip to Brentford. The winger is a major doubt after picking up a hip injury in midweek. His absence would be a severe blow to the Magpies’ attack, robbing them of their most direct forward.
Unfortunately, Newcastle’s offensive options are already stretched. This is because the match comes just too soon for new signing Yoane Wissa to make his debut. The club has ruled Wissa out as he continues to build his fitness, which denies him a reunion against his former club.
The team’s absentee list also includes Tino Livramento (knee), Will Osula (ankle), and Harrison Ashby (thigh). All three players remain sidelined. There is, however, a small piece of positive news for Howe’s depleted backline. Defender Lewis Hall is “getting closer” to a comeback after more than a month out. In fact, he has returned to training. He could be in contention for a place on the substitutes’ bench, providing a welcome boost to the squad’s defensive depth.
