Chelsea make the long trip to Azerbaijan today, aiming to take a significant step towards the Champions League knockout rounds.
A victory against the surprise package Qarabağ would solidify their position in the top half of the league stage table. The Blues have recovered well from an opening-day defeat in this competition. Impressively, they have now won their last two European games. This run includes a 5-1 demolition of Ajax on matchday three.
Enzo Maresca’s side also has an excellent record in international competitions, winning 20 of 23 such games. Furthermore, they have scored in all 23 of those matches. They also have a perfect history against Qarabağ. Chelsea won their two previous meetings in 2017 by an aggregate score of 10-0. However, Chelsea must be careful. They have lost their last three consecutive away games in the Champions League, a streak they will be desperate to end.
Chelsea team news
Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Chelsea will be without winger Pedro Neto for their Champions League trip to Qarabağ. Reportedly, the Portuguese international picked up a “small issue” in the win against Tottenham. As a result, the club is leaving him at home as a precaution.
Furthermore, Maresca noted that he intends to rotate his squad for this fixture. He cited the long flight to Azerbaijan and the need for fresh players. This is because the team are scheduled to return early on Thursday morning, just before a Saturday league game. However, the manager’s attacking options are boosted by the return of striker Liam Delap. He is now available for selection after serving his one-match domestic suspension.
Unfortunately, Chelsea remain without several other key players for the trip. For instance, Cole Palmer continues to be managed “day-by-day” with his groin issue. He is not yet back in team training. There was, however, a more positive update on defender Benoit Badiashile. He is recovering well and could be available after the upcoming international break. Finally, this pair join long-term absentees Levi Colwill and Dario Essugo on the sidelines.
Chelsea predicted lineup
Possible Chelsea starting XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Acheampong, Adarabioyo, Cucurella; Lavia, Fernandez; Estevao, Pedro, Gittens; Delap
