Alexis Mac Allister says that Liverpool’s win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League “doesn’t mean anything” after going out in the round of 16 last season.
The Argentine midfielder scored the only goal of the game to give the Reds a huge victory over Xabi Alonso’s side at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The result sees Liverpool move up to sixth in the league phase table, level on nine points with Real, and puts their recent poor form firmly behind them.
Mac Allister: Liverpool win over Real Madrid ‘doesn’t mean anything’
Mac Allister, who was named Player of the Match after the final whistle, recalled how the Merseyside outfit topped the standings last year, but were eliminated in the first round of the knockout stage by PSG on penalties.
“I think it was a good game against a really good team,” he told Amazon Prime. A win, but we know it doesn’t mean anything – the experience last season, we finished first and then after that we were out quite early.”
It was looking like another frustrating night for Liverpool against Thibaut Courtois, who put in a performance reminiscent of the Champions League final in 2022. The Belgian made eight saves on this occasion, although he could not stop Mac Allister’s decisive effort on the hour mark.
“He is a fantastic keeper – we all know,” Mac Allister said. “He had a few saves, so again I think he is a really good keeper, but today I think we were better and deserved to win.”

The goal will be a massive confidence boost for the 26-year-old, who has endured a difficult few months on the pitch. Asked what it could mean for his season, he replied: “I always try to think about the team, not me.
“It’s true that it wasn’t the beginning (to the campaign) that I wanted, it was a little bit hard for me but now I’m getting into the rhythm. I just wanted to play some games in a row so I’m happy I got the possibility to play against Aston Villa and Real Madrid today. I’m really happy with it.”
