Chelsea defender withdraws from England squad with injury

Chelsea have confirmed that Reece James has withdrawn from the England squad for October’s internationals.

James picked up an injury during the club’s 2-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday evening and has now pulled out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

As a result, the 25-year-old will miss Thursday’s friendly against Wales and the World Cup qualifier against Latvia on Tuesday October 14th. It’s a blow to the Chelsea captain, who had cemented a regular place in Tuchel’s side at right-back.

His absence has led to a maiden call-up for Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly. The 20-year-old, who can operate at left-back and in midfield, has been called up to the senior England squad for the first time.
