Enzo Maresca has cast doubt on whether Chelsea will sign a centre-back before September’s transfer deadline.
Maresca has made clear his desire for new arrivals after after Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury. The England international has undergone surgery and is set to miss the majority of the current campaign.
Maresca expressed his concerns with Chelsea’s current options in Colwill’s absence earlier this month, but suggested the club’s board are unlikely to enter the transfer market. The window closes on September 1st but Maresca has reiterated that Chelsea are focused on ‘internal solutions.
Josh Acheampong started alongside Trevoh Chalobah in the Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, with the 19-year-old stepping in for the injured Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo.
“We are looking for an internal solution,” Maresca said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing West Ham on Friday.
“We showed that last game against Palace and we will see what happens, we are trying to find a solution.
“I said, and I repeat again – I must need to improve my English – we are looking for a solution and we will see what happens.”
