📈 Power Rankings: Arsenal edge up, Man City climb

Our latest Power Rankings table is in after a positive week of wins for the bulk of the top 10.

📈 Power Rankings: Arsenal edge up, Man City climb

10. Real Madrid (No change)

Xabi Alonso looked to be fighting for his job at Real Madrid a week ago, but back-to-back wins have cooled down the Bernabeu hot-seat.

Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo goals helped Los Blancos to an important, if unconvincing, win at Alaves, before a rotated Real side secured Copa del Rey progress at minnows Talavera. Alonso’s team are not entirely convincing but two wins have reduced the pressure – for now.

9. Lens (Non change)

Lens are the form team across Europe’s top five leagues right now, with nine wins from their last 10 Ligue 1 games. It’s five on the bounce for the table toppers, who remain ahead of Paris Saint-Germain in their pursuit of a first title this century.

Two goals from former Celtic and Crystal Palace striker Odsonne Edouard downed Nice at the weekend to keep their title charge in motion.

8. Atletico Madrid (No change)

A positive week for Atletico Madrid, who made it three wins in a row.

A hard-fought win over Valencia got their league campaign back on track, before Antoine Griezmann’s double helped Atleti survive a scare and sink fourth-tier Atlético Baleares in the Copa del Rey.

7. Inter Milan ⬇️ (last week: 2)

An ever-changing Serie A title race has Inter Milan back on top, after the Nerazzurri capitalised on slips elsewhere to move back to the summit. Yann Bisseck and Lautaro Martinez earned Inter a 2-1 win at Genoa and a place at the top of the table.

There remains just three points between the top four, however, with AC Milan, Napoli and AS Roma all in pursuit.

6. Paris Saint-Germain ⬆️ (last week: 7)

Paris Saint-Germain are celebrating a historic week after becoming just the sixth team in history to win the sextuple.

The European champions beat Flamengo in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final, to make it six trophies this calendar year. Only Barcelona (2009) and Bayern Munich (2020) have ever previously achieved that feat.

5. Aston Villa (No change)

Aston Villa are snowballing in momentum under Unai Emery. The Villans have won nine games in a row in all competitions, beating Basel in the Europa League last Thursday, before an entertaining win at West Ham.

Villa are just three points behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League, and it might just be time to consider them as genuine contenders. Few sides can match their form – or performances – right now.

4. Barcelona ⬇️ (last week: 5)

Barcelona slip a place despite two professional performances over the last week.

Raphinha – a bizarre omission from the FIFPRO World XI this week – scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Osasuna in La Liga, before another 2-0 win saw the Catalans conquer Guadalajara in the Copa del Rey.

3. Manchester City ⬆️ (last week: 4)

Arsenal will be looking nervously over their shoulder in the Premier League, with Manchester City breathing down their neck. Pep Guardiola’s side have put their foot on the gas in recent weeks, with impressive 3-0 wins over high-flying Sunderland and Crystal Palace signs of a well-oiled machine.

City then made light work of Brentford in the League Cup quarter-finals to continue their recent form. With Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden in fine fettle, the Citizens are looking good right now.

2. Bayern Munich ⬇️ (last week: 2)

A bump in the road for Bayern Munich, who dropped points at Bundesliga basement club Mainz at the weekend.

Harry Kane bailed Bayern out with a late penalty to rescue a 2-2 draw against the struggling side. A rare blemish for Bayern, who remain nine points clear in the title race.

1. Arsenal ⬆️ (last week: 2)

Arsenal edge back above Bayern Munich in our Power Rankings table, despite an awkward win over Wolves. The Gunners required two own goals to overcome the Premier League’s bottom team, who remain without a win in the top flight this season.

Was this a sign of Arsenal’s faults? Or the sign of potential champions to win when far from their best?
