Wenger hails Arsenal’s ‘team spirit’ after Southampton win

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised his team for having the third best home record in the Premier League earlier this week, and his side kept up their impressive form at the Emirates today with a 3-2 victory over Southampton.

It was far from a straightforward victory for the Gunners over a struggling Saints side however.

Southampton took an early lead through Shane Long, before goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Danny Wellbeck put the home side ahead going into the half-time break.

Mark Hughes side showed plenty of fight however, and substitute Charlie Austin netted in the 73rd minute to bring the scores level heading into the final period of the game.

Although, the often criticised Wellbeck would be the Gunners hero when he netted a 81st minute winner to secure the victory and  Arsenal’s third league victory in a row.

Speaking to the BBC after the game Wenger hailed his sides team spirit when he said:

“It’s not easy because we played against a team who fights not to go down, mentally it is very difficult. Some of our players had heavy legs but we still won the game when we were questioned, I really like the spirit in this team.

“Every game you win makes you stronger, it’s important that you keep your run going. We have gone through a difficult spell, but because the players are proud we came back. Now we hope to keep this going.

“I think I have repeated that I really like Danny Welbeck, I am very pleased for him because he is a guy who went through a very difficult time and has shown exceptional mental strength to come back.”

Wenger certainly has a point in regards to his team’s form at the Emirates as they currently have the third best home record in the Premier League.

However, Arsenal’s ground once again had huge amounts of empty seats during yesterday’s victory, clearly showing that large groups of the Gunner’s support are still deciding to show how unhappy they are with the club’s overall performance this season by staying away from their club’s home games.
